What began with a lighthearted trip to explore Broadway’s shuttered theater district and a stroll along Museum Mile when the museums were closed soon took on a much larger meaning and ambition. At a scary moment when everything seemed uncertain, walking around New York served as a reminder of all the ways the city was still a rock, joy, and inspiration. Wherever they liked, he wrote-preferably someplace meaningful to them, someplace that illuminated the city and what they loved about it. “‘ The Intimate City’ is a joyful miscellany of people seeing things in the urban landscape, the streets alive with remembrances and ideas even when those streets are relatively empty of people.” -Robert Sullivan, New York Times Book Reviewįrom the New York Times architecture critic, his celebrated walking tours of New York City, now expanded, covering four of the five boroughs and some 540 million years of history, accompanied by some of the people who know it bestĪs New York came to a halt with COVID, Michael Kimmelman composed an email to a group of architects, historians, writers, and friends, inviting them to take a walk.

At times the description of sailing through rough seas is strong enough to make the reader almost feel seasick. The book captures the rituals of life at sea and goes into the heart of the action. It tells the story of HMS Compass Rose, a corvette, and HMS Saltash, a frigate, and the crews who sailed them from 1939 to 1945. It focuses on the relationship between Captain George Ericson and a reserve officer who becomes his Number One, Keith Lockhart. Monsarrat described it as the story ‘of one ocean, two ships, and about one hundred and fifty men.’ In a gritty, realistic style the book conveys the joys and the tragedies, the cruelty and the horror of the Battle of Atlantic. In 1951 Nicholas Monsarrat published his fourth book on the naval war, The Cruel Sea. The face of Jack Hawkins looks out from the 1953 poster for The Cruel Sea. Taylor Downing reviews a WWII naval epic based closely on Nicholas Monsarrat’s famous novel. 5/13/2023 0 Comments The demon prince ann aguirreThe Queen of Attolia – Megan Whalen Turner (re-read). You may read more than me, you may read less, it’s not a competition. This is a running list of what I read each year, it’s not good or bad, it’s just a list. Covering the galaxy in setting and every possible emotion, these tales pose some interesting questions. When science fiction writer Monica Hughes posed this question to a group of science fiction and fantasy writers, the result was this incredible collection of stories. Unforseen events follow, and Tom becomes involved in a crime which he needs both courage and resilience to survive. What If? It’s a question that is the beginning of endless possibilities. Fantastical stories to spur the imagination. 5/12/2023 0 Comments The starcatchers seriesIn most books where a teen is the central hero, many of the decisions made lead the character to success, regardless of the inherent dangers. I enjoyed this book as much as the other two, especially seeing the layers that the authors create that tie into the Peter Pan folklore. Harking to my review of Peter and the Shadow Thieves, there is not much I can tell you about Rundoon that won’t spoil the first two books. The unique talents of Barry and Pearson blend to re-imagine the origins and backstory of Peter Pan, adding new characters that interact seamlessly with our heroes. The third book in the Starcatchers series continues the fantastic storytelling, character development and excitement of the previous entries. Peter and the Secret of Rundoon (The Starcatchers) by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. When I read it as now in the great stillness of these distant parts, then your beautiful concern for life moves me, moves me even more than it moved me in Paris, where everything strikes the ear differently and fades away before the excessive, the earth-shaking noise. It was the letter of the 2nd May and I am sure that you remember it. not that I had forgotten it on the contrary it was of the kind which one reads again, when one finds it among one’s letters, and in it I seemed to get to know you, as it were, most intimately. My very dear Herr Kappus, I have left a letter of yours long unanswered I make use of this first moment of brightness to greet you, dear Sir. But I met with a long period of rain, which is trying to-day for the first time to clear up over the restlessly storm-driven land. I left Paris about ten days ago, thoroughly unwell and tired, and travelled to a great northerly plain, whose expanse, quiet and sky are to return me to health again. He isn’t perfect, despite what some people say in their reviews. Kind of a jerk, the kind of bad boy that we all love to hate and love to love at the same time. I got more than I bargained for in the end. ) I certainly do not live under Victorian Era standards, but I wanted SOMETHING. I kept thinking, meh, I need something juicy. Several times during the story, I wanted to be shocked. Julia’s family are not backwards thinkers, quite the opposite, but some things are shocking no matter what. Only after the death of her husband and encouragement from her sister to be bold does she allow herself to open up and try to enjoy her life. In the beginning she is not vapid, but she is not particularly interesting. It is all in the details when one is trying to weed out a murderer.Īs a character, Julia becomes more likable as the story unfolds. Though, I suppose for a mystery, that makes sense. Tiny little details that you really don’t need to hear about. Maybe that is on par with other Victorian mystery novels, but there was a lot of information that wasn’t necessary. There was quite a bit of what I call “filler” info. I definitely liked it enough to keep reading the series. I’m not really sure how I feel about this yet. I couldn't give it 4, but it is more than 3.5. Here is a review of each book as I read it:ģ.75 stars. I read them straight through and immediately got the next few. Historical Mystery is not always my thing. I never expected to enjoy it as much as I did. I received this bundle for a very low price on my kindle. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Sean howe marvelI collected comics for many years from the late '60's until the mid-90's when the blatant commercialism of multiple foil covers for the same book and horrible new art style (Yes, I mean you Liefeld) finally drove me away. Incorporating more than 100 original interviews with those who worked behind the scenes at Marvel over a 70-year-span, Marvel Comics packs anecdotes and analysis into a gripping narrative of how a small group of people on the cusp of failure created one of the most enduring pop cultural forces in contemporary America. “Sean Howe’s history of Marvel makes a compulsively readable, riotous and heartbreaking version of my favorite story, that of how a bunch of weirdoes changed the world…That it’s all true is just frosting on the cake.” (Jonathan Lethem)įor the first time, Marvel Comics tells the stories of the men who made Marvel: Martin Goodman, the self-made publisher who forayed into comics after a get-rich-quick tip in 1939 Stan Lee, the energetic editor who would shepherd the company through thick and thin for decades and Jack Kirby, the WW II veteran who would co-create Captain America in 1940 and, 20 years later, developed with Lee the bulk of the company’s marquee characters in a three-year frenzy. The defining, behind-the-scenes chronicle of one of the most extraordinary, beloved, and dominant pop cultural entities in America’s history - Marvel Comics - and the outsized personalities who made Marvel, including Martin Goodman, Stan Lee, and Jack Kirby. 5/12/2023 0 Comments The dirty billionaireI hiss under my breath as I stare at the headline-and the compromising picture accompanying it-splashed in vivid color across the front page of the gossip rag displayed prominently in the checkout line at my supermarket.
